Plastic

Plastic is one of the highest used ‘substitution’ products – and takes the place of wood, stone, horn, leather, bone, paper, metal, glass and ceramics. It’s imperviousness to water, low cost and ease of manufacture and versatility creates a great profile of different products that it can be used in. It’s not the be all and end all of traditional materials, as it’s too expensive to replace wood, concrete or ceramics in bulky items – but it does work well in a variety of situations where wood or other traditional materials would be too heavy or too prone to damage, such as window surrounds.

The use of plastic is constrained by the very qualities it’s prized for – its inability to resist high temperatures, or acids and other corrosive materials, oxidisation and other elements that punish materials – plastic is no match for them and will degrade eventually. Under high temperatures, plastic turns molten, so is unsuitable for cooking and though they have a low conduction, they are no match for metals of any kind.
