Brass is a coveted material, used for everything from door numbers and door furnishings (handles, letter boxes, kick plates) to ornaments and beyond. It is thought to auto sterilise itself over eight hours from most bugs, and is prized because of its gold-like appearance.
Polished brass is a blend of several different alloys, making it hard wearing and attractive, and is polished to a high sheen – it’s malleability at relatively manageable temperatures means that it’s great for moulded objects as well as plate or flat items – it can have antimony added to reduce rust, or iron to make it tougher, but it’s basic composition is zinc and copper.
Polished or unpolished, brass is eye-catching, though usually fairly impractical to use over large surfaces such as worktops because it’s not as tough as iron or steel and can sometimes bend – as a decorative element however, it can be one of the most effective decorative touches usable with ease.
